Oh yes, the gear DOES matter!
Albert Mihaiteanu 18.08.2026
For years I kept hearing the same thing: the gear doesn't matter that much. It's the performance, the microphone, the room, the person behind the controls...
Well, after buying the Apollo Twin X Gen2, I have to say it: oh yes, the gear DOES matter. Big time.
I have owned and worked with several audio interfaces over the years, usually somewhere in the €200–400 range, and I genuinely thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect from an interface. The Apollo completely changed that perspective for me. This is simply another level.
The difference wasn't something I had to convince myself I could hear. My recordings changed. The sound, the detail, the clarity and the overall quality of what I was capturing immediately felt different. It changed the way I look at the role of the audio interface in the entire recording chain.
One of my favourite examples is bass. I recorded bass for an album through the Apollo and achieved a sound I am genuinely happy with using only stock plugins afterwards. No complicated chain and no collection of expensive third-party plugins needed to make the recording sound good. Starting with a great capture makes everything that follows easier.
I am incredibly happy that I decided to spend more this time instead of buying yet another interface in the price range I had always stayed in. For me, the investment was absolutely worth it.
There is one downside, however, and it has nothing to do with the hardware itself: Universal Audio's plugin ecosystem and marketing can be seriously annoying. Having a huge number of plugins displayed or installed that you don't actually own is frustrating, and their marketing approach can feel very aggressive. I eventually found a way to clean up my system and get rid of the plugins I didn't own, which made the experience much better.
But none of that changes my opinion of the Apollo Twin X itself.
Boy, did I make the right choice.
It has genuinely changed my expectations of what an audio interface can contribute to a recording setup. I don't regret this purchase for a second.

I recently invested in the Universal Audio Apollo Twin X Duo Gen2 Ess+ and have been very impressed with its performance in my studio. Its exceptional AD/DA converters and Unison preamps deliver pristine sound quality, while the onboard UAD DSP provides near-zero latency monitoring with high-quality plug-ins. The device is very user friendly, making setup and daily use straightforward.

I had already purchased the plug-ins that came with the device, but when I reached out to UAD support, they kindly offered me new plug-ins as replacements. Their helpful and understanding service really added extra value to my experience.

Pros:
• Exceptional audio quality with top-notch converters and Unison preamps
• Real-time UAD DSP processing for low-latency monitoring
• Compact, robust design ideal for home studios
• User friendly with excellent customer support
• Replacement plug-ins offered by support, adding extra value

Cons:
• Premium price tag
• Limited I/O (only two mic preamps) may not suit larger recording setups

Overall, the Apollo Twin X Duo Gen2 Ess+ is a stellar choice for home and project studios seeking professional-quality recording and mixing capabilities in a compact package.

Very good one
Jim_Clock 07.01.2026
I was surprised to discover that connecting guitar through this one gives a very special character, kind of like a bit less lows and more mids. Gives similar taste as EMG over passive pickups.
I tried to find the same sound character in other audiointerfaces and even preamps, but I couldn't. I tried Arturia audiofuse, motu m4, rme babyface fs, apogee desktop, uad volt 476, motu m4, ha i73pro, clarett +2pre, as well as preamps: wa tb12, ha312L, ha73, neve1073lb, ISA one. They just sounded less focused, more rounded - not optimal for what I play. I have no idea how good are mic preamps, but I'm sure with the published specs it is a good pro level.
Note that there's no cable by default and it will not work on Windows - for that find USB version.
digital light for volume is always on, so you always know what the volume is.
VST shop is where they earn money, I think. like cinemas and selling pop-corn. Anyways, I decided to use it just as AD converter and do all processing in DAW. easier and laptops are powerfull enough to handle the load even with a vwery low buffer sizes. I feel no latency at 32 samples.

Great for introducing yourself into pro production.
Petr Štukl 11.04.2026
If you are thinking about updating your audio interface this is great choice for the price. Unison preamps super cool. Really great interface for recording vocals and guitar with effects without latency. Auto-gain is really handy feature too. A lot of people says you lock yourself in the UA ecosystem but I really like their plugins. (Sound, GUI, etc)

I would really recommend this audio interface since you can connect it to more professional gear. Love it.

Good luck to competition...
Panos T 20.04.2026
No introduction needed! Same mixes on same monitoring system sounded like you cleared the jam from your ears spotting instantly what is wrong! Reference tracks are now a clear benchmark and you realize that you are not so close as you thought you were. Brilliant and a real hack for better productions. Worth every penny imho. Where UAD differs from the other pro bands is USB models works only on Windows! This is something to note because there is no such limitation to their competitors. On the other hand Thunderbolt units works under both Windows and macOS if it happens to have a Thunderbolt 3 port available to your desktop and laptop. A safe bet to newer Macs but not a default and cheap option for motherboard's manufacturers. So choose wisely before you buy!
