WO
An interesting and novel product but too expensive

I wanted to try this chin rest because I'm learning to play without a shoulder rest, after many years wedded to a shoulder rest. This new "spring" chin rest performs as advertised. After 2 or 3 days experimenting different heights and angles, the chin rest can be affixed and remains very stable. I've been playing on it for 3 weeks now, and like it. The violin's lower edge sits directly on the collarbone, and the jaw can apply relatively light pressure to keep the violin stable during shifts. The head stays pretty upright. The violin also sounds great under the ear (I don't know if listeners would hear a difference). The chin rest requires time to adjust to, and I'm still not 100% sure I'll keep it on the violin definitively. But I don't regret the purchase. It's a good choice for someone exploring posture and relaxation issues and learning to play without a shoulder rest. HOWEVER, I find Pirastro's pricing policy unfortunate. I don't see violin teachers trying this, let alone recommending it to their students at 500 euros. Even professional performers may hesitate because of the price and the adaptation time required. Also, if I decide to adopt this solution permanently, I would have liked to install it on my other violins, but that is not going to happen at this price! Bottom line: an interesting and novel product but too expensive.
