Full-range stereo PA with plenty of power

The LD Systems Maui 28 G3 Mix Line Bundle is a stereo column PA made up of two active units: a Maui 28 G3 Mix with an integrated digital mixer, and a standard Maui 28 G3 without one. The mixer is built into the subwoofer of the Mix system and takes care of volume, effects and dynamics, while Bluetooth 5.0 with the AAC codec lets users stream audio straight to the system. Input-wise, there are four XLR-TRS combo sockets: two for microphones, line signals or high-impedance instruments like guitars, and two for line-level signals only. This channel count is tailored to smaller line-ups: singer-songwriters, solo entertainers and DJs get two channels for vocals, guitar or announcements, plus a stereo line input for a keyboard, backing tracks, or a DJ controller. Performers who need more inputs – for a small band, say – will find them in the Maui 28 G3 Mix SysLink Bundle, which pairs two Mix systems. And since no single component weighs more than 23.6kg (about 52lbs), the set is easy to transport, while the slim white columns barely register visually at galas and receptions.

LD Systems Maui 28 G3 Mix

Big, punchy sound

Both systems in the Maui 28 G3 Mix Line Bundle consist of three components: a subwoofer, a lower column, and an upper column. Each sub houses a 12" woofer that reaches right down to 37Hz in its bass reflex cabinet, and the optimised design of the bass reflex ports also reduces flow noise at high levels. Both columns are loaded with drivers: The lower column contains six 3.5" full-range drivers and passes the signal up via multipin connectors to the upper column, which holds a further six 3.5" drivers plus a pair of 1" tweeters. With twelve midrange drivers in total, the work in the mids is shared across plenty of cones – so there's plenty of headroom for vocals and instruments even at higher volumes. Both columns are made of powder-coated aluminium. Their cardioid design works purely acoustically, through the construction of the housing, and attenuates sound to the rear by up to 18dB in the low mids and mids. That means less risk of feedback from open mics on stage and fewer reflections off the back wall.

Even coverage across the room

The tweeters in both column systems of the Maui 28 G3 Mix Line Bundle fire into a waveguide whose shape was calculated using the boundary element method (BEM). It spreads the high frequencies evenly across the 120° horizontal dispersion angle, so listeners off to the side hear much the same amount of treble as those standing right in front. That's a real plus in wide rooms where the audience is spread out – at weddings or corporate events, for example. The narrow 30° vertical dispersion and the cardioid attenuation to the rear keep sound away from the ceiling and back wall, which is an advantage for readings, lectures, and quieter styles of music where every word of the lyrics counts. Each system delivers 1,030W RMS (2,060W peak) – enough for DJs working bigger dance floors and solo entertainers playing club and community events in function rooms or smaller marquees.

Flexible, safe and rugged

For transport, each system in the Maui 28 G3 Mix Line Bundle breaks down into its three parts. The subwoofers are the heaviest components, but both come with carrying handles, and their birch plywood cabinets with polyurea coating are built for frequent loading and unloading. Thanks to their powder-coated aluminium housings, the two columns of each system weigh just 12.6kg (under 30lbs) as a pair. Setting up is simply a matter of stacking the parts: The multipin connections carry the signal without any extra cables, and no speaker stands are needed. The two systems are connected using the 5m (16ft) pro snake XLR cable included in the bundle; for wider stages, they can simply be swapped for any longer XLR cable. The subwoofers are around 50cm tall and the two columns measure 1.54m together, so each assembled system stands just over 2m (around 6ft 9in) – high enough for the sound to reach the back rows, even over a standing crowd. Protection circuits against short circuits, DC and overheating keep the electronics safe even during long sessions, such an entire day and night of background music.

About LD Systems

LD Systems originated in Germany and is a brand of the Adam Hall Group. The company’s ambition is to give musicians the freedom they need to effectively express their musical ideas on stage. To achieve this, LD Systems has developed products that include affordable speaker series, wireless microphones, and in-ear monitoring systems. LD Systems attaches great importance to the durability and user-friendliness of its products. Right from the development stage, attention is paid to simple, intuitive, and effective operability. LD Systems also pays great attention to the design of its equipment, so that the technology is not only acoustically but also visually attractive. Accordingly, LD Systems has already been awarded several renowned design prizes.

Effects and DSP for optimum sound

Both systems in the Maui 28 G3 Mix Line Bundle use LD Systems' DynX DSP: FIR filters for the crossover and EQ keep the drivers phase-aligned with each other, and a multiband limiter ensures low-distortion reproduction even at high levels. Only the Maui 28 G3 Mix has the mixer, though, which is operated either via the control panel on the back of the subwoofer or with the Maui app for iOS and Android. Depending on the mode – Easy or Expert – users get a 3-band or 5-band EQ. Alongside a compressor and gate for dynamics processing, the mixer offers a delay and a reverb that can be applied to individual channels. 48V phantom power can be activated for the first two channels, so condenser mics are no problem either. Each input can be polarity-inverted, and channels can be given names and colours for a clear overview. The volume of the subwoofer and columns can be set separately – useful for matching the bass level to the room. And with the app, event managers can adjust their mix from out in the audience area, where you hear exactly what your listeners hear.
