Clavia Nord Electro 7 HP stage piano

The striking red keyboards from Swedish manufacturer Clavia have become a familiar sight on stages around the world, and their widespread use is no coincidence. A combination of excellent sounds, dependable performance, and a practical user interface has made them a popular choice among live keyboardists, particularly those looking for convincing piano, organ, and string sounds. Depending on the application, the Nord Electro, Nord Piano/Grand, and Nord Stage offer different approaches to these essential sounds and performance requirements. The Nord Electro has now reached its seventh generation, with each new version introducing useful innovations and refinements that further build on the strengths of the established series.

Sounds great

The Clavia Nord Electro has traditionally focused on recreating classic electromechanical and acoustic instruments in a compact yet robust chassis. With version 7, the concept is expanded by the addition of a fully-fledged synthesizer featuring analogue waveforms and straightforward FM synthesis, replacing the previously sample-based synthesis approach. The new model also introduces dedicated effects for each section, along with a larger colour display and encoder that replace the smaller OLED display used in version 6. The organ section, which includes a Leslie simulation, has likewise been updated and now follows the design of the Nord Organ 3 rather than the C2D. Together, these additions provide considerably more flexibility when shaping and refining sounds.

The key to success

The Clavia Nord Electro 7 is available in several versions, with 61 or 73-key waterfall keyboards in the Electro 7 61/73 models, or 73 keys with Nord Hammer Action Portable in the Electro 7 HP, which provides a weighted hammer-action keyboard. All versions now feature genuine drawbars, replacing the LED drawbars found on some previous models. The term "waterfall" refers to semi-weighted keys without the small "lip" found on conventional piano keys, allowing experienced Hammond players to perform characteristic glissandos with the palm, elbow, or backs of the fingers. Here, however, we are focusing on the Nord Electro 7 HP, which with its weighted keyboard is more likely to appeal to keyboard players who come from a piano rather than an organ background.

About Clavia Nord

The history of the Swedish company Clavia began in the 1980s with electronic drums. In 1995, the Nord Lead was released – as one of the world's first virtual-analogue synthesizers, it laid the foundations for an unprecedented success story. Even then, Clavia products came in the trademark red finish that makes the instruments so instantly recognisable. Soon the company was developing not only synthesizers but, with the Nord Electro, Nord Stage, and Nord Piano series, keyboards that gave musicians completely new possibilities on stage and in the studio. Besides their outstanding sound quality and their uncompromising build quality, it was their simplicity and ease of use that made Clavia the go-to instruments for live keyboardists from the very beginning. The instruments are now sold under the Nord Keyboards brand, but are still handmade in Sweden.

Vintage flair

The Clavia Nord Electro 7 HP is aimed primarily at experienced keyboardists who appreciate classic sounds in a modern instrument. Its B3 organ sounds, combined with the Leslie simulation and physical drawbars, offer plenty of hands-on control and are particularly enjoyable in a live setting, as are the piano, electric piano, and clavinet sounds. The synthesizer section is now fully equipped, which effectively closes the gap with the Nord Stage, while all 73-key models now feature a pitch stick and mod wheel. All of this together means a product that was already highly capable has become even more compelling with the addition of these new features.
